This week we speak with Jasper Young about his family’s multi-generational tradition on the island. Young’s Bicycle Shop is an island institution and this week we hear a bit about the history of the business that has given wheels to generation after generation of Nantucketers.

Tell Us About the History of Young’s Bicycle Shop.

Jasper Young: Young’s Bicycle shop was started in 1931 by my great grandfather Harvey A. Young in his backyard. He started small but the business quickly grew and two generations later Young’s was also renting cars and 4×4 Jeeps. Young’s continues to get people the wheels they need so they can enjoy the natural beauty of Nantucket.

As a Third Generation Young in the Shop, Tell Us About What the Shop Means To You.

Jasper Young: My favorite aspect about working at Young’s is being a part of the long history of hospitality on Nantucket. Many people got their first job at Young’s and use the skills they learn to become leaders in the community. As a cyclist commuter it’s an added bonus to support something I believe in.

Are There Any Stories About the Shop that Are Passed Down from Generation to Generation?

Jasper Young: Young’s got started around the depression and was doing mostly repairs but some locals couldn’t always pay for their bill right away. In exchange, they would let Harvey A. rent out their bicycle for the summer season to cover the costs of fixing it. Because there wasn’t a huge rental fleet, he sometimes even rented his own family’s bikes!
