The 2021 Bird Guide-in-Residence will be Seth Engelbourg. Seth has worked as the Naturalist Educator and Program Manager at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation since 2016. In this role, Seth leads birding field trips, engages in avian ecology research, and presents ornithological talks to the Nantucket community.
Seth holds an MS in Environmental Conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has studied birds around the world, most notably in Costa Rica, Israel, the Pacific Northwest, and the Cape and Islands.
Apart from his ornithological experience, Seth is a keen naturalist and has a comprehensive understanding of Nantucket flora and fauna. He is passionate about educating people of all ages and backgrounds about nature and strives to meet people on a personal level independent of their experience.
Spring migration brings a rich variety of seabirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl to the island each year, drawing amateur and professional ornithologists alike to catch a glimpse of the activity along the Atlantic Flyway in the island’s unique ecosystem. American Oystercatchers, Piping Plovers, Northern Gannets, and the unpredictable Snowy Owl are staples of Nantucket’s birding season each spring.
This season we’ve partnered with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation to create a one-of-a-kind week of birding, socializing, presentation, and discussion to bring Spring migration on the island to life for enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. Led by LLNF Naturalist Seth Engelbourg, an expert on the island’s flora, fauna, and avian ecology, this program takes guests into some of the island’s most exclusive birding sites for a closer look at the island’s annual migratory guests. Complete with a full weekend program of presentations and discussion, this program is designed to accommodate all levels of interest and experience.
